Frequently Asked Questions

It is important that you feel comfortable in your choice of moving forward with therapy.  I compiled a list of questions commonly asked by individuals who are considering beginning a therapy process to enhance their own wellness.  Hopefully, this information can help you get a sense if we would work well together.  If you have other questions, please reach out.

Why is your practice called EQ Wellness?

EQ stands for Emotional Intelligence (aka Emotional Quotient). I offer you the opportunity to tap into your EQ in order to enhance your overall wellness when it comes to your own mental health and the quality of your relationships.

What is your approach?

My goal is to help you enhance your life by tapping into your emotional intelligence. I am highly collaborative with my clients and believe that you are truly the experts in your own lives and I am the facilitator bringing my experience, knowledge, and compassion into the session in order to best support your therapy process.

I am trauma informed and work from an integrative perspective to carefully tailor the therapy to your needs. While I draw from a number of evident based therapies, the two of the primary modalities used in my practice are, the Internal Family Systems model (IFS) and the Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFT).  Both of these models are highly impactful as well as gentle, focusing on the internal as well as external attachments in our lives.

What types of clients do you work with?

I work with teenage girls and adult women. My specialty is helping improve self-esteem, calming anxiety, and strengthening family relationships. I have seen the best success working with highly motivated clients who are committed and invested in the work involved with their own personal growth.  Individuals who are leaders in some capacity in their home and/or professional lives find my services to be extremely impactful.

What can I expect by working with you?

The following are step we will take in order to work together:

1) Reach out for a phone consultation.

2) Fill out an intake packet and return with confirmation of your first appointment.

3) Let's meet for your initial assessment therapy appointment where we get to know you and begin putting together a plan that will best support your wellness goals.

4) I will reserve a weekly appointment for your ongoing sessions with us to make sure you have consistency, and the timing works well for your schedule on an ongoing basis.

I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Can therapy really help me?

Yes!  If you are looking to feel better or improve interactions with others, I can help.  As I get to know you, I will want to know about what is already working so you can build on those abilities and enhance what you are already doing.  If you find that a change would be beneficial to you, I can support you towards that goal as well.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Therapy sessions are 45-60 minutes and once a week. Each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therefore, therapy will be different depending on the individual. I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

How long will it take?

On average, my clients attend 20 therapy sessions. However, some only need a couple sessions and get what they need in a shorter period of time while others continue working with me for years. This really depends on your circumstances and how therapy is helping you. We can continue working together as long as you feel it is beneficial. We can absolutely discuss your unique circumstances and our thoughts on how we can help you achieve your goals for therapy.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

First of all, it’s great that you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for a session a week. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.

I want my teen to get the most out of therapy, what can I do to help?

I often incorporate family sessions so you have an opportunity to be a part of your child’s healing. After an individual session, ask her how her session went and let her know she can always speak with you.  Many parents take the ride to or back from therapy as an opportunity to do something their teen enjoys.  I value interactions with parents and welcome questions regarding therapy for your teen.

We are having issues with our teenager. Should we come in as a family or bring her for individual therapy?

We will discuss the options for beginning our work together during our free initial phone consultation. Usual options are to first meet with the parents and then the teen, or to meet with the parents and the teen.  Together we will determine whether starting off as a family or seeing your teen individually would be most beneficial. It may be effective option to incorporate family therapy in addition to the individual sessions. Each family and person is unique and we take all factors into consideration.

Therapy is expensive. How do I know it is worthwhile?

Yes, therapy is an investment of money and time.  It's an investment in you.  What you gain in our work together will always be with you and will enhance you current and future relationships.  I know that it is a big deal to commit to personal development and that is why I do my upmost to make this investment be as valuable to you as possible.  I participate in ongoing training and consultation in order to make sure that you are getting the most possible out of our time together.  During our work together, your ROI is my #1 priority!
